Last week was held the Global Shop 2014! The Association for Retail Environments (A.R.E.). Its partner associations brought some of the most innovative ideas and trends in retail design through their GlobalShop sessions this year, including a panel discussion on how the Pop-up shop is truly revolutionizing retail.

A.R.E. sessions are designed to give attendees a sneak peek into the biggest ideas in retail, presented by industry leaders and trendsetters.

Global Shop is the largest tradeshow dedicated to commercial space design, merchandising and visual presentation products and point-of-purchase marketing. Held once a year, this show gathers countless retail exhibitors and designers. Almost 700 vendors exhibit all of the components necessary to build and maintain a retail storefront; flooring options, lighting, loss prevention, music systems, wall finishes, shelving, mannequins, etc. Among the 10,000 attendees are store designers, planners, visual merchandisers, and operations staff from small stores to huge chains.

Each year, improvements in manufacturing technology provide for more affordable and interesting options. Global Shop also offers a robust conference schedule over the three days of the show. The keynote speaker this year was Kip Tindell, Chairman and CEO of The Container Store. Tindell discussed “Organization with Heart,” describing The Container Stores’ commitment to be an amazing place to work.

They’re certainly successful, as they have been named to Fortune Magazines “100 Best Companies to Work For” for 15 straight years. The company is guided by their 7 Foundation Principles; these consist of all of the components you would expect, such as hiring great people and communicating with them. The difference is, The Container Store has figured out how to actually do this. While not a huge company (64 stores), they still manage to bring small store ethics and behaviors to a chain. Educational breakouts were offered in 4 tracks, Consumer, Store, International Trends and Independent Retailer Trends.
